The Second Trumpet: Pearl Harbor, Oceans in Crisis

2nd Trumpet Dual Fulfillment: The Seas Struck, Oceans in Crisis

Revelation 8:8 Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Roman Empire

The second trumpet describes the Vandals attack of Rome by Genseric.  Uriah Smith says His conquests were for the most part naval; and his triumphs were ‘as it were a great mountain burning with fire, cast into the sea...’

He says; “What figure would better, or even so well, illustrate the collision of navies, and the general havoc of war on the maritime coasts? ...Nothing but a fierce maritime warfare would fulfill the prediction.”

“From the port of Carthage he repeatedly made piratical sallies, and preyed on the Roman commerce, and waged war with that empire. To cope with this sea monarch, the Roman emperor, Majorian, made extensive naval preparations.  Guided by their secret intelligence, (Genseric) surprised the unguarded fleet in the bay of Cartagena; many of the ships were sunk, taken, or burned, and the preparations of three years were destroyed in a single day.”

These events happened Around A.D. 428-468.

United States

An event which happened in the United States which also fulfills the second trumpet was the Japanese surprise attack of US unguarded naval fleet in Pearl Harbor.  The attack was also the immediate cause of the United States' entry into World War II.

This shows again how the trumpets are highlighting things such as “wars and rumors of wars” prophesied by Jesus which were to stand as signs of His soon coming, and it shows how God marks the activities of man – something as big as the second world war did not escape His notice and was documented in the Bible well before it occurred.

The united states suffered 405,399 deaths related to World War II and 670,846 were wounded, for a total of 1,076,245 war casualties.

Pearl Harbor was also an attack on the western United States, in keeping with the first fulfillment of the first four trumpets being on Western Rome. Though Hawaii was only a US territory at the time of the attack, it was to become a state later and the attack was directly on an American base.

It’s interesting that the New King James Bible chooses the words “the seas struck” for the caption to these verses, because no choice of words could have better portrayed what happened at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 than that it was “struck.”  Uriah Smith’s description of what happened to the Roman navy in the bay of Cartagena in fulfillment of the second trumpet could have nearly been written about the Japanese air strike in Pearl Harbor which took the US naval fleet completely off guard.

The fact that it says “something like” a great mountain burning with fire and being thrown into the sea probably rules out the idea of a volcano or actual mountain falling into the ocean from an earthquake- because it’s not actually a mountain, but rather “something like” it, or something that could be described as looking like a mountain burning with fire, that actually sunk entirely into the sea by some purposeful force.  A blazing ship could certainly fit this type of description – especially when the incident occurred because of an enemy attack, which could represent sort of forcefully “throwing” it into the sea.

Another element that seems to match the first fulfillment of the prophecy is the German U-boat “sea-wolf” naval attacks (similar to the “piratical sallies” of Genseric against the Roman Empire).  The pirate attacks of the German U-Boats were significant in WWII naval losses. An example of this was the battle of March 1943 in which 88 merchant ships and 15 escorts, were headed for Europe from New York and were relentlessly attacked by 45 U-Boats operating individually and in "wolfpacks," mid-Atlantic.  They fired 90 torpedoes, sinking 22 ships and resulting in 372 dead.

The heavy theme of maritime losses in World War II holds uncanny parallels to the naval battles between the Vandals and the Roman Empire which historically fulfilled the second trumpet prophecy.  According to the War Shipping Administration, “the U.S. Merchant Marine suffered the highest rate of casualties of any service in World War II. Officially, a total of 1,554 ships were sunk due to war conditions, including 733 ships of over 1,000 gross tons. Hundreds of other ships were damaged by torpedoes, shelling, bombs, kamikazes, mines, etc. Foreign flag ships, especially those with Naval Armed Guard on board as well as ships belonging to U.S. territories such as the Philippines, are included in this list.” http://www.usmm.org/shipsunkdamaged.html

“Members of the U.S. Merchant Marines serving aboard U.S. cargo ships and tankers during World War II suffered a greater percentage of war related deaths than did the nations regular armed forces combined....Some 43 years after the war, on January 19, 1988, those who served on ocean-going vessels were granted veteran status by Congress.  ‘[Mariners] have written one of its most brilliant chapters. They have delivered the goods when and where needed in every theater of operations and across every ocean in the biggest, the most difficult and dangerous job ever undertaken. As time goes on, there will be greater public understanding of our merchant's fleet record during this war [World War II].’ (said) President Franklin D. Roosevelt.”  http://www.cjmcertificates.com/inspirational-pages/highest-wwii-casualties.htm

Pictures of the USS Arizona blazing with fire before it was sunk seem to especially match the description of the second trumpet prophecy.  If you do an image search for “USS Arizona pearl harbor attack” you will see multiple images of what could fit the description of “something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea.”

Nearly half of the American fatalities from the Pearl Harbor attack were due to the explosion of the USS Arizona’s forward magazine after it was hit by a shell.  The blast was said to have lifted the ship that was one of the Navy’s biggest battleships 15 feet out of the water, which adds more to the visual picture of something like a mountain literally falling out of the air, or being “thrown”  into the sea. Eyewitnesses said that the smoke and flames must have gone up more than 5-600 feet in the air.  The ship burned for days.

It’s interesting that the ship which matches the description “something like a great mountain” was named after a mountainous territory of the United States.  Arizona has over 200 mountain ranges, and was a territory of the Western United States that had a “wild west” reputation of shoot-outs, brothels and Hollywood film making.  It seems that a message comes across through this that God takes note of the fact that the land which He granted to the great United States of America was made a home for corruption and violence.

The fact that this kind of debauchery was glorified through Hollywood doesn’t seem to have escaped God’s notice either- as is noted by the fact that even the USS Arizona itself had actually appeared in a Hollywood movie in years prior to the Pearl Harbor attack.  Thus it quite fittingly symbolized the state of Arizona that was glorified in American movies.

But since a part can represent the whole, a ship named after one of the United States might also represent the country as a whole as well.  The US is considered the “west,” as it is the westernmost country in the world. This land which was chosen and blessed by God has turned many resources to corruption, and the glorification of every form of evil (especially sexual) through Hollywood movie making is one of the most obvious ways that the United States is making all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of fornication.

One of the best descriptions of the negative influences of theatre and movies was given by Ellen White nearly 100 years ago when she said “Among the most dangerous resorts for pleasure is the theater. Instead of being a school of morality and virtue, and is so often claimed, it is the very hotbed of immorality. Vicious habits and sinful propensities are strengthened and confirmed by these entertainments. Low songs, lewd gestures, expressions, and attitudes, deprave the imagination, and debase the morals. Every youth who habitually attends such exhibitions will be corrupted in principle. There is no influence in our land more powerful to poison the imagination, to destroy religious impressions, and to blunt the relish for the tranquil pleasures and sober realities of life than theatrical amusements. The love for these scenes increases with every indulgence, as the desire for intoxicating drink strengthens with its use.”{Christian Education 35.1}

In the second trumpet’s description of it as “something like a great mountain” we are reminded of God’s description of Babylon.  Jeremiah 51 says of Babylon; 25 “Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, who destroys all the earth,” says the LORD. “And I will stretch out My hand against you, roll you down from the rocks, And make you a burnt mountain.63 Now it shall be, when you have finished reading this book, that you shall tie a stone to it and throw it out into the Euphrates. 64 Then you shall say, ‘Thus Babylon shall sink and not rise from the catastrophe that I will bring upon her. And they shall be weary.’

God’s description revealed to Jeremiah here holds some very close parallels to the second trumpet prophecy.  First in saying “who destroys all the earth” it is speaking in the same language as the concluding verse of the 7 trumpets prophecy which says that God is coming to destroy those who destroy the earth.  Then God says “I will... make you a burnt mountain,” after which he describes what amounts to throwing that burning mountain into the water, proclaiming that it will sink and not rise.

Revelation 18 holds similar parallels to the second trumpet in describing the final destruction of Babylon.  It repeatedly describes merchant pursuits, ships and sailors, and says; 18 ‘(they) cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What is like this great city?’  19 They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.’ 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!’ 21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.

This is the same language as the second trumpet as well as Jeremiah 51 that described Babylon as a great burning mountain that will be thrown into the sea.  A key to understanding God’s judgment here is in the statement “you holy apostles and prophets, ...God has avenged you on her,” because as we mentioned at the beginning of this study, Rome anciently was the territory which first persecuted Christians and 7th day Sabbath keepers by bringing in Sunday laws through cooperation with the papacy and Revelation also points out in chapter 13 that the United States will persecute 7th day Sabbath keeping Christians by bringing in Sunday laws through cooperation with the papacy.  Babylon ultimately represents “various organizations” (as described in Great Controversy page 603) which will work together to persecute God’s commandment-keeping people, and the Bible makes it clear that they will be judged for that.

James White also brought out the fact that the 7 trumpet’s prophecy is a  judgment on “Babylon” in the statement where he said of the Roman Empire; “Under the first four trumpets  the two western divisions fell, and under the fifth and sixth the eastern empire was crushed; but under the seventh trumpet great Babylon entire will sink to rise no more at all.”

So, within the same paragraph he refers to the 7 trumpets as fulfilling on what is literally the Roman Empire, but spiritually Babylon.

It’s interesting to note that an obvious association between United States and Babylon is found on the US $1 bill, where you can see the pyramid that clearly represents the unfinished tower of Babel.

One of the signature characteristics of spiritual Babylon is the persecution God’s commandment-keeping people through false religion that attempts to compel the conscience by the enactment of Sunday laws.  As mentioned, this happened through Rome formerly, and Bible prophecy foretells that it will happen through the US as well.  Therefore, it seems of no small consequence, therefore, that the Pearl Harbor attack actually took place on Sunday morning. The US’s enemies chose Sunday morning to attack, knowing that it would be the most unguarded time due to church involvement, etc. and God allowed this as an important part of an attack which the Bible points out as a judgment against our land.

Pictures of military chapel services on Sunday morning of the Pearl Harbor attack are positive proof that the idea of trying to enact Sunday laws in order to prevent God’s judgment and “get our country back to God” is erroneous.  Sunday is a false Sabbath enacted by the authority of the church to honor the Sun god, rather than the true God.  The Seventh-day Sabbath, which was established from the Garden of Eden, remains the true “Lord’s Day,” as spoken of by John the Revelator, since Jesus said “the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

God recognizes that many sincere worshipers of God remain in a Babylonian system of worship which honors the day of the Sun god when he calls to them “come out of her my people.

One other point of note about the symbolism involved in judgment on a ship called “Arizona.” That is that Arizona is home to the Grand Canyon.  Wikipedia says, in describing Arizona tourism; “The Grand Canyon has become an iconic symbol of the West and the nation as a whole.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Arizona

The Grand Canyon was most likely formed by a dam breach after Noah’s flood, in some ways this judgment on the “USS Arizona” seems to represent God’s ultimate judgment on sin- as sin has also been represented as the great “breach” or gulf between heaven and earth.

Isaiah 30 speaks of sin as a breach that will be judged when it says; 12 “Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: ‘Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perversity, and rely on them, 13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, a bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant. 14  and He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, which is broken in pieces; He shall not spare.’”

Judgment on a battleship is also significant in that it can symbolize a country.  Wikipedia says regarding battleships in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; “Battleships were a symbol of naval dominance and national might, and for decades the battleship was a major factor in both diplomacy and military strategy.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship

The Bible employs multiple nautical allegories as symbolisms and warnings as well http://www.adventistonline.com/forum/topics/biblical-nautical-allegories-symbol-and-warning-for-god-s-church )  The sinking of a large ship also brings to mind the epic and symbolic Titanic, which was thought to be unsinkable.

As previously mentioned, once one of the 7 trumpets sounds it seems to repeat in smaller echo events that act as reminders throughout time.  One such “echo” of the second trumpet fulfillment seems to be the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster of April 20, 2010.

The prophecy clearly refers to oceanic pollution as being a sign of it’s fulfillment, referring to part of the sea becoming “blood” and sea creatures dying.  Doing an online image search about the event immediately turns up pictures that look something like a great mountain burning with fire. After blazing for 36 hours the Deep Horizon sank into the ocean, which was followed by massive oceanic pollution by the millions barrels of oil released from it’s broken pipes in the following months. This tragedy is considered to be the second largest environmental disaster in US history, behind the Dust Bowl.

The following video shows pictures of the Deep Horizon Oil Rig ablaze, some of which look strikingly similar to the blazing USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor; http://www.youtube.com/embed/oLLcUR679p0 Consider also the following images of the flow of bloody-looking crude oil on the ocean’s surface.  The red color comes from oxidation of the oil’s iron content when it comes in contact with oxygen. http://www.youtube.com/embed/chq6ESJf89U

The second trumpet heralds oceanic pollution as a sign of the end times. The pollution of the oceans in our day reflects the times in which we live. Industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, pollution from ships and oil tankers, deep sea mining, and trash dumping are just some of the sources causing our oceans to be clogged with toxic chemicals and debris.  Besides the destruction of habitats and creatures, oceanic pollution is promoting the growth of algae and bacteria which can use up oxygen sources valuable to marine life. The Red Tide is seen as this type of phenomenon in some cases.  These marine algal blooms are increased by pollution such as agricultural runoff.

Another prime example of the results of oceanic dumping is the Pacific Trash Vortex, a huge gyre of marine liter with high concentrations of plastics and chemical sludge in the water.  Dead birds are often found with bellies full of plastic trash pieces who mistook the trash as food sources. Along with climate change, dredging, draining of wetlands and costal development are also responsible for ongoing destruction of marine habitats.

The second trumpet’s herald of oceanic pollution as a sign of the end times indicates that God sees this as a problem of apocalyptic proportions.  For human beings to “destroy the earth” through pollution of natural resources is not looked upon lightly by the Creator of life who put mankind in charge of caring for the earth from the beginning of time.

We would do well to see the problem of ocean pollution for what it really is- a symptom of the terminal illness of sin and evil which are increasingly taking over planet Earth.
